day #365 - the end of an era

I thought I was on top of it; I had finished early and was looking for a movie to watch already 3 hours ago. And I don't know how time went by. A phonecall, some networking studying, some online shopping and here we are, already past the time for an early movie. Regardless, today is a special day. The blog is over! I finished 365 days of daily painting and recording it, whatever that means. A big part of the process I will have to keep doing mainly for myself. Perhaps taking daily photos of my work and saving it on some folder. This has provem useful many times when I trying to date a piece I've been working on. Also making a small diary of today's achievements. It's still useful. But this will be done for my eyes only. I also don't know if I will be continuing my obsessively daily painting. How would life be if I had days off? Now for example that I'm moving out and I have to daily chores that until now were completely taken care of, perhaps I'll allow my

day #40 - Fire and Ice

Ah okay, I was just watching the trailer of the 1983 animated film called "Fire and Ice" after watching James Gurney's latest youtube video (such an awesome guy, teacher and eye) and the title fire and ice just came out of my fingers. Today I was hoping to work from life perhaps a watercolor painting at the Marina but I was so busy with work that I doubt I even had the opportunity to glance at the boats for my 3 hours stay. So here we are again, drawing late into the night, which is not the worst thing that could happen to you.

So today I draw(?),sketched(?), rendered(?) a few figures. I like the postures, thought a few are too stiff (particularly the last girl, where the posture is horrible). Things started getting interesting when I started rendering the heads and I'd say the highlight of the day has been the witch with the fluffy robe casting the spell. I love the design, shading, and dynamic posture. Even the hands look good! What am I saying? Even the zapping energy bolts are cool (though I had to redo them thrice). This a happy coincidence - everything fell to place with this one.

From there on I went rendering female figures; thought I used the same thick painterly brush so I couldn't get too detailed and the line width was constant something that is not my cup of tea when sketching but it worked fine.

Did some successful head studies too; an avatarish female character with long fingers (and arms) and interesting hair and wrapped up with the stiff one. I mean, other than the stiff postures, there is also the expression that is very stiff and the hands don't help. Truth be told, I keep reverting to that pose, and I don't know why. It's not particularly sexy, interesting or whatever. Maybe it's easy.

Nonetheless, I like the rendering a lot; the face, eyes, the ears that are essentially defined by the negative space of the surrounding tones, the hair, the nose; the clothes! Oh the clothes! All these fabrics (I'm not very fashion conscious so I'm excited that I managed to pull something more out of a tshirt and pair of jeans) out of my imagination. I also did a good effort to rendering the different base colors shades of the different materials and as a matter of fact, I feel I've been successful for a change! Even the more glossy leather-skirt and corset fell more shiny. Or mayge it's my imagination. But I consciously tried. I like the underlying black T-shirt too, and the width of the thighs. Anyway, that's all for now.
